A cuppa with… Rachel Mace

I’m a Learning Manager at Barclays.

What county do you live in?
Northamptonshire, but I was born and bred all the way over in Cambridgeshire.

What made you choose fitnat?
I was having what had become a fairly regular (yearly) conversation with my best friend about how we both needed to lose weight and get fitter. She mentioned fitnaturally as something one of her other friends was doing. I liked the sound of it, because who doesn’t like butter, cream and full fat milk? When I got home I did a little googling, found fitnat, liked what I saw and signed up there and then.

How long have you been with fitnaturally and had you tried other diets?
I originally joined back in September 2016 and successfully lost weight and thought I was ready to go it alone… turns out I wasn’t! I came back and re-engaged properly with the eatnaturally plan at the beginning of last August and have lost weight steadily since then. I’ve just gone through the two stone barrier! I’d tried several other plans; Slimming World, which I couldn’t get my head around at all; Weight Watchers, which was always successful in the short term but I always ‘fell off the wagon’; and one diet based on my blood test results called SureSlim – I lost four stone on that one but the regime was draconian and not something I could, nor would, want to sustain long-term.

What inspires you?
Seeing people achieve way beyond the level other people expect of them.

What’s your desert island food?
A flaky pastry sausage roll that’s still warm from not being out of the oven that long preferably, if I’ve got access to a time machine, from the bakery I used to work at as a Saturday girl when I was at school.

What are the joys and benefits of fitnat?
There are so many! Having a week of delicious meals planned for you and knowing that they are packed full of the nutrition I need. Being able to eat cream, whole milk and butter on a regular basis. Free sourdough workshops for clients; since I baked my first loaf (which was a bit of a disaster) I haven’t looked back and can count on the fingers of one hand the number of loaves I’ve bought in the last nine months.

Oh, and the fitnaturally hive on Facebook. If I’m honest I was a bit of a lurker when I first joined, sitting back and not really taking part. Little by little I started to engage with the group and it is such a warm and supportive environment; I honestly believe that without the support of the hive my weight loss wouldn’t have been as good.

No spoilers!!

Most interesting thing you’ve learnt this week?
There is going to be a UK version of RuPaul’s Drag Race!!!!!!!!!! Oh and my career break has finally been approved for my extended trip to Australia and New Zealand next year (to celebrate a birthday we’re not really talking about yet!)

What’s your food nemesis?
Potatoes, in any which way, shape or form they come in! Left to my own devices I could eat them until the cows come home.

Favourite fitnat meal?
So many but if you twisted my arm then… Creamy mushroom tortellini with lemon, mint and Parmesan; Lentil keema; Lentil, medjool and feta salad; Medieval Mushroom Pasties; Lentil, potato and cauliflower curry.

By the way, despite my choices, I’m not vegetarian.

Favourite form of activity?
Yoga – even though I’m not that bendy – I am so chilled out by the end of a session

What’s one of your family’s speciality dishes?
The recipe that has been passed down through the generations is Christmas pudding. It’s my grandmother’s recipe, when I was younger my mum used to make puddings for all the family. I am now the custodian and will make a batch each year for family and friends.

One big thing you’ve learnt from fitnat?
That I don’t need to snack and that three meals a day are enough.

Last thing you ate?
Lamb chops with tabbouleh salad from the eatnaturally plan.

What one piece of health advice would you give people?
Move more. I started walking more through a fitnat step challenge and I have reaped the benefits both physically and mentally. In six months I have doubled (and sometimes trebled) the amount of exercise I complete on a daily basis. There’s even a rumour going around that I’ve started running!

Tell us something about yourself that people will find riveting?
I can pronounce the longest place name in the world…Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu…I had to learn it for a school assembly when I was eight and it’s just stuck in my brain.
